Career: Matheson played 13 seasons in the NFL, spending the last nine with the Dolphins after a trade in 1971 brought him to Miami from the Cleveland Browns. He collected 713 tackles, 15 QB sacks, 12 interceptions for 166 yards, and eight fumble recoveries in his 180 game career. The Dolphins' 53 Defense was named not only for Matheson's jersey number, but also for the role he played in a defense that created five short zones and three deep zones in its pass defense. In 1972, Matheson had 68 tackles, four passes defensed and 2.5 sacks.
